Bermuda was settled in 1609 by shipwrecked sailors en route to Virginia. Transportation was an issue then, as it is today. In an effort to preserve the islands integrity, automobiles were banned from 1908 to 1946. Even today, visitors are not allowed to rent cars. The conventional means to get around is aboard the pink and blue buses or hop a ferry (441-295- 4506). Another option is taking a guided taxi tour by hiring a certified tour guide. For formal events, such as weddings, couples often opt for a horse-drawn carriage.

The speed limit is strictly enforced and fines for violations are severe. So, slow down and enjoy Bermuda. Let the engine warm up for about 1 minute before starting to ride. For faster response when braking, ride with your fingers of your left hand resting on the rear brake lever. Park only where it is legal to do so. It is a smart idea to wear a jacket and shoes when riding. And, bright clothing makes it easy for other drivers to see you. Fasten your belongings securely in the cycles basket.
The yellow centre line on the road is a warning that it is dangerous to pass or illegal to park. Do not touch the muffler once the engine has been run. It becomes very hot.
